14 Fertilized!

April 30, 2008

I got a call from one of the nurses today, and I did a 3 way call with Collin so he could hear the news as well. Of the 26 eggs that they retrieved yesterday, 19 were mature. They injected Collin’s sperm in the 19, and of those, 14 fertilized! So, we have 14 Pollock Embryos in the lab right now! It’s crazy how amazing all of this is. Such a detailed science, but oh, what an amazing God we have. We’re not sure how healthy those 14 embryo’s are at this point, and I think that’s why they watch them for a few days to see which ones keep improving, and which don’t. We are going back to the doctors office on Friday for what we believe is our embryo transfer. I say, “believe” because there is still a small thought that they will want to do the transfer on Sunday, and give the little guys a couple more days to grow. But, we’ll see what happens.

I am back among the living - somewhat. I’m still in some pain and I don’t think all of the anesthesia has completely warn off. Today, I’ve been sleeping and relaxing with Callaway. She’s taking good care of me while Collin is at work.

Last night, we did our first progesterone shot. Oh goodness…that needle is a doozy! From my perspective, it wasn’t actually that bad. The Progesterone is an oil, so it’s much thicker than anything we’ve injected so far. That being said, it takes much longer to inject and we’ve been instructed to rub the injection spot vigorously after the shot has been given, then I’m to sit on a heating pad. I guess if you don’t rub it and apply heat, the oil will just ball up and become a big knot. I was a little worried last night because my ovaries were really hurting, and I didn’t know how vigorously I could rub my phanny. It’s kind of hard for Collin, too, since his hands and arms tire easily. Fortunately for us, Collin’s parents came by to drop of Callaway (they were babysitting while we did the egg retrieval) and I recruited Carolyn (my MIL) to rub my phanny. I think at this point in the game, you don’t really care who does what to you as long as it results in pregnancy! Carolyn did a great job and she doesn’t know it yet, but I just might give her the official title of “Phanny Rubber Extroirdinare”.

I’m sure Collin has a different perspective of the whole Progesterone shot experience, but I’ll let him tell you about that.

God is faithful and we cannot wait to see what He does with our little embryos. We are continually amazed that originally, our doctor thought that I would have a difficult time getting many eggs at all due to my high FSH level at the beginning of this whole process. What an amazing thing we get to experience.

Please keep praying for our little embryos, and for me as I will begin bed rest on Friday if we do the transfer on that day. I’m a little nervous about laying in bed for three days straight, but I know that my amazing husband and wonderful family will take good care of me.

Kyla
