Saturday’s Appointment

I was fortunate enough to go with Kyla to her appointment on Saturday for another ultrasound and round of blood work. The picture you see is of 3 follicles that are in one of Kyla’s ovaries. Could one or more of these turn out to be a baby? I guess only God knows…and time will tell.
Dr. Potter continues to be impressed with how Kyla is responding to the drugs and we are scheduled for her egg retrieval on Tuesday. At this time, there seems to be at least 14 follicles that have grown to the expected size, which they will pull out on Tuesday and evaluate their quality. We are hopeful that quite a few of them will be high enough quality to create embryos. Any that aren’t used with this cycle we can then freeze and use in the future.
At our appointment, we also learned about the new regiment of drugs that Kyla will be taking. The main one will be a progesterone shot that will be given in her phanny with a needle that is about 3 times as long as the ones we’ve been using. She’ll also be taking antibiotics, steroids, aspirin and prenatal vitamins. Please pray for Kyla, because we understand that the progesterone shots aren’t very fun to receive. Hopefully, there won’t be much “Bloodeh” involved.
Tonight we gave Kyla a HCG Trigger shot that will make her ovulate within 36 hours, which is timed exactly for our egg retrieval appointment of Tuesday at 9am.
We are both so excited and nervous as we enter this pivotal stage of our IVF cycle. It’s crazy to think that in just over 36 hours from the time I am typing this, doctors and nurses will be getting Kyla’s eggs and my sperm together and creating embryos.
Please continue to keep us in your prayers.
We will check in again after our appointment on Tuesday with all the details on how many eggs they were able to retrieve from Kyla and especially how Kyla did with the whole procedure.
Friday update

Bright and early I was at the doctor’s office for my ultrasound. On Tuesday, my ultrasound showed that I had 14 follicles ranging from 6 to 11 millimeters. A mature egg is in a follicle that is approximately 17 or 18 millimeters. Today I have 21 follicles ranging from 9 to 32 mm!!! Not quite sure if the one that’s 32 mm is really that big, or if it’s two that are really close together that look like one. Not that it really matters, because what matters is that the follicles are growing, my estrogen level has leaped up to 1791 (from 513 on Tuesday) and everyone is quite pleased with the progress we’re seeing.
Quick tangent - They opened a Peets Coffee and Tea on the bottom floor of my doctor’s office, which made my morning just that much better as I skipped out to my car to head to work!
My nurse called to tell me that Dr. Potter wants to see me again tomorrow morning, and that we may be moving along more quickly than expected. So, I’ll have another ultrasound at the crack of dawn (8:00am), and Dr. Potter will tell us when we’ll be doing the egg retrieval. We’ll give another update tomorrow when we wake up from our nap.
Yippee. ..this week has gone by so quickly and it’s been full of joys and blessings.

Bloodeh

Well, my shot giving technique went south last night. If I was a real nurse, I think I would have been fired by now, but Kyla has a very forgiving heart. After pulling the shot out from Kyla’s phanny, some blood started coming out from the injection site. I started saying “Blood…Blood…Blood” and I couldn’t help to think of this YouTube video I recently watched. (Thanks to Donna R. for finding this one for Kyla a few weeks back). I hope you get a good laugh out of the video…because I sure did. I needed it, since making my wife bleed isn’t my favorite duty as I continue to play the role of Gaylord.
Enjoy!
Way to go, Drugs!

This morning I went in for an ultrasound to see how the stimulation drugs are working. The nurse told me that at this stage (4 days of stimulation injections) they are looking for a total of 8 to 10 follicles (the follicles hold the eggs while they mature). They counted a total of 14 follicles this morning!!! 9 on my right ovary and 5 on my left. I was so happy to see those little black splotches on the monitor! The nurse said that I am responding very well to the medication and that I will most likely continue with the same dosage. I also had blood drawn which will tell them what my estrogen level is. We are looking for a level around 200. I will get a phone call from my nurse later today to let me know where we’re at. My next appointment is this Friday, for another ultrasound and blood draw.
I left the doctors office this morning, feeling full of hope and excitement. I know we still have a ways to go with the egg retrieval, embryo transfer and more waiting, but it was so awesome to see that everything is working the way it should.
Please continue to pray for us. Pray for the follicles to keep multiplying and growing so that we have more than enough embryos to use and freeze at the end of this cycle. Pray for my emotional well being as it seems that I can be laughing hysterically one second and on the verge of tears the next. Thankfully, these past few days have been filled with more laughter than tears, so things are lookin’ up! And of course, pray for Collin. He has been my strength, my comic relief and my voice of reason. For those who really know me, you know that I can be a handful. Now, imagine my brain on drugs - drugs filled with hormones! My husband is truly a saint and I must say that he could give Gaylord Focker a run for his money any day of the week!
