Busy weekend for the Pollock Family!
September 23, 2008
Sorry it’s been a while since we’ve posted a blog…the length of this one should make up for our absence…
On Friday, the 19th, we had our monthly appointment at Kaiser. Everything was great, until the midwife started talking about the gestational diabetes test I would have to take around 28 weeks. I asked if PCOS (Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome - which I was diagnosed with prior to our IVF cycle) plays any role in gestational diabetes, since it’s basically an intolerance to insulin. The midwife looked surprised and proceeded to ask lots of questions - when was I diagnosed, have I ever been on Metformin, had I mentioned this at my first Kaiser appointment (answers: late 2007, yes until I was 12 weeks pregnant, and mentioned it and asked questions about it). She told us that because I have PCOS, I should have taken the test for gestational diabetes at the very beginning of my pregnancy and it must have been missed on the first appointment - OOPS!!! I asked when I needed to take the test and she said, “how does this weekend sound?” We were a little startled by the urgency, but figured we’d better follow directions! So, on Saturday at 9:00pm, I took my last bite of ice cream and started the 12 hour fast. I showed up at Kaiser at 9:00am on Sunday morning very hungry and little grumpy. My blood was drawn and I had to drink a very sugary orange soda-type drink. My blood was drawn again at 1 hour post drink, 2 hours post drink and 3 hours post drink. I had to stay there the whole time, and thanks to my father-in-law, I had a good book to keep me company (Dean Koontz - Odd Thomas. If you haven’t already read it - you definitely should!). Collin then took me out to a yummy lunch at Denny’s where I indulged in Belgian Waffles!!!
We’re still technically waiting for the results from our doctor, but Kaiser e-mails tests results and our research has told us that I do not have gestational diabetes - Thank God! I don’t know if I’ll have to take the test again in a few weeks, or if that’s the only one I’ll have to do.
In other news, we’ve finally succeeded in cleaning out the office and turning it into a nursery. We purchased some paint samples this weekend and are getting ready to turn the blue office into a brown and pink nursery for our little girl.
I had just gotten over an icky cold when Collin started to get sick (probably caught it from me in the first place), he lovingly gave the cold back to me and now we’re both sick. Needless to say, we’ve gone through boxes of tissue and a tube of Vicks Vapo-Rub since that’s about all I can use. We’ve been getting lots of rest and not doing much around the house these past couple of days.
The baby is moving and kicking like crazy and I love every second of it. Collin felt her move a couple of times last week and it’s so exciting to watch his face as he feels his daughter move in my tummy. It’s not the painful, jabbing that I’ve heard about, which I’m sure will come in due time.
The other day, I read that our baby is now the size of a spaghetti squash. I didn’t know what that was, or how big it is. But we were grocery shopping on Sunday and I saw a spaghetti squash! I held it up and got all excited and this stranger said, “oh what’s that?” and I said, “That is the size of the baby in my belly right now!!!”. She acted excited for me, but it wasn’t really my intention to share that news with a perfect stranger. I was actually trying to get Collin’s attention who was over by the apples. All of my ruckus did get his attention and we reveled in the idea that our baby is that big.
That’s all I have for now. Hopefully this blog finds you doing well and cold-free.

Got something to say?

Sorry you guys have been sick. Colds are always yuck. I was reading & thinking, “Well, these last few months are going to be the last time for a long time that they will be able to rest when they’re sick”…so enjoy, even through the sickness. Praying for you!

You need to go back to the store and take a picture with the squash for the blog. It would be great. Collin could practice his photo skills!
