Heart rates and Colds and New Years Eve
January 3, 2009
We had our appointment on Wednesday (New Years Eve), which was more eventful than we would have liked it to be. Just like they always do, they listened to Elyana’s heart rate. This time, as soon as her heart rate came through the speakers, I noticed that it seemed slower than normal. Our midwife also noticed this (that’s why they pay her the big bucks), and said that the heart rate was at 100, and it should be between 110 - 160. She ordered a stress test where they monitor the baby’s heart for a period of time and also measure the amount of amniotic fluid. So, off we went to the “testing area”. I held in my fear until they started to strap up my belly. That’s when I kind of lost it. I looked at Collin and the tears started. He immediately calmed me down and said, “Everything’s fine, they’re taking good care of you guys, and we’re in the right place”. Then he handed me my iPhone so I could be distracted by a game. They monitored Elyana’s heart rate for about 20 minutes and the entire time it was within the 110-160 range. Then, they took us over to the ultrasound machine and started measuring the amount of amniotic fluid. We were told that it was supposed to be between 8 and 24 units (not sure what the exact measurement is). The first machine measured 8. So, they took us to the high-tech machine, where they found 11. They decided since our Midwife heard the heart rate at 100 and we were measuring on the low side of amniotic fluid, they want me to come in twice a week for more monitoring. So, from what I gather, I will be strapped up to the heart rate machine and have an ultrasound to measure the amniotic fluid each time I go in, in addition to meeting with the Doctor or Midwife. They felt comfortable sending us home and told us to pay close attention to Elyana’s movements as a babys movements are the best indicator that they are doing well. Thankfully, she’s been moving like crazy, and hasn’t given us any cause for concern. Once we left the doctors office, Collin made an executive decision that I was to rest and relax as much as possible from here on out. I didn’t argue.
Now, onto the “Colds” part of the title. The same morning as our appointment, Collin said that he wasn’t feeling very well. Kind of achy, and his throat hurt. We got home from our doctors appointment around 3:00 and we were both in bed by 4:30. We had rented a couple of movies, got the chips and salsa ready, and camped out in bed for the duration of New Years Eve. We were both konked out by 10:30 and missed ball drop and countdown entirely. Needless to say, it was our most boring New Years Eve celebration ever! But, we definitely needed the rest.
Collin woke up in the middle of the night coughing and aching worse than before. We were hoping it would get better, but no such luck. Yesterday, we made an appointment for him and got all stocked up on antibiotics, cough medicine, tea and vicks. My poor hubby is miserable! We’re praying that he gets better before Elyana makes her grand entrance and also that I don’t catch whatever he has. Please keep us in your prayers.
My next appointment is this Monday. I have an ultrasound scheduled to measure the baby, and then I go over to the “stress test” area to repeat the heart rate test and measure the fluid. We are really praying that God keeps our little Elyana healthy and her parents, too!

Got something to say?

Thanks for the update. Like I said earlier…all is well. It always got a little crazy at the end of all of my pregnancies…esp. with Jacob. We’ll be praying….also for Collin to feel better! Poor guy! Rest up you three!
